Mannheim's Water Tower was built between 1886 and 1889 and, at around 60 meters in height, is the city's best-known landmark. The monumental sandstone structure is crowned by a figure of Amphitrite, the consort of the sea god Poseidon. The tower is set within the magnificent Art Nouveau grounds of Friedrichsplatz, with fountains, rose beds and arcades. Especially on mild evenings and when the fountains are illuminated, the ensemble is a popular meeting point. The Water Tower is considered the very symbol of Mannheim.
