Viennese coffee-house culture in the Squares: Café Vienna has been a fixture in Mannheim's city center for years, built around cakes, pastries and coffee in well-kept surroundings. The crowd is mixed accordingly, from an afternoon slice of cake to a long session with the newspaper. Its position in the middle of the Squares makes it a practical break while strolling the Planken or after a visit to the Kunsthalle. Unlike the chain cafés in the pedestrian zone, you are served at the table here. For visitors bridging half an hour between two sights, it is one of the quieter options downtown.
