Day two combines the green Herzogenriedpark with a stroll through the city centre. Two days full of nature, animals, technology and wonder — perfect for children's eyes.
Best time to visit: April to October — in good weather the parks and playgrounds are the most fun
Day 1
Day 1 — Luisenpark, Technoseum and the stars
We start with gondolettas and storks at Luisenpark, discover hands-on technology at the Technoseum in the afternoon and finish beneath the starry sky at the planetarium.
- 9:30 - 12:00
Luisenpark for the whole family
Luisenpark is the perfect start for families. Gondolettas glide across the Kutzerweiher, animals wait at the farm and the petting enclosure, and large playgrounds invite a good romp. The plant house with its butterflies and the free-flying storks delight children especially.
Tip: A gondoletta ride across the Kutzerweiher is the highlight for children — best done first thing in the morning.
- 12:15 - 13:30
Lunch in Luisenpark
In Luisenpark and on the edge of the Oststadt there is family-friendly dining with terraces — from chips and pancakes to ice cream. A relaxed break in the green before heading to the Technoseum.
- 14:00 - 16:30
Hands-on Technoseum
The Technoseum is an experiential museum where technology becomes tangible: crank the handles at interactive stations, pull levers and try out experiments. Steam engines, old cars and the Elementarium make science exciting for children. An afternoon full of aha moments.
Tip: The daily demonstrations on the historic machines are a hit with children.
- 16:45 - 18:00
Planetarium Mannheim
The Planetarium Mannheim whisks you beneath a huge dome full of stars. Child-friendly shows explain planets, constellations and journeys into space — impressive and educational at once. A wondrous finish to an eventful day.
- 18:30
Family-friendly dining
Back in the city centre, there are many easygoing restaurants with children's menus around the Planken and the squares — from the Italian to the burger kitchen. A cosy end to a long day.
- Overnight
Staying in the city centre
A central location in the squares keeps distances short — ideal with children. From here the parks, museums and main station are quickly reached.
Day 2
Day 2 — Herzogenriedpark and the squares
The second day combines the green Herzogenriedpark, with its animals and playgrounds, with a relaxed stroll through the city centre and on to the Water Tower.
- 9:30 - 12:00
Herzogenriedpark
Herzogenriedpark in the north of the city is a green treasure for families. A small animal park with goats, sheep and birds, sprawling lawns, a large adventure playground and the Multihalle as a striking landmark make it the ideal day out. Here children can romp to their hearts' content.
Tip: The petting zoo and the adventure playground are the great favourites of the little ones.
- 12:15 - 13:30
Lunch in the Neckarstadt
In the lively Neckarstadt around the park there are down-to-earth venues and cafes with a wide choice of dishes. An easygoing lunch break before heading back to the city centre.
- 14:00 - 15:30
Water Tower and water features
On Friedrichsplatz the Water Tower beckons with its sprawling gardens. Children love the water features and the open lawns, while parents admire the Art Nouveau architecture. A lovely spot for a break in the middle of the city.
- 15:45 - 17:00
A stroll along the Planken
A relaxed stroll along the Planken between the Water Tower and Paradeplatz rounds off the day. Street performers, ice cream parlours and shop windows provide the entertainment — a cosy amble for the whole family.
- 18:00
A cosy family evening
To finish, a family-friendly restaurant in the squares — from pizza and pasta to regional cuisine. A relaxed dinner after two eventful days in Mannheim.
