Mannheim National Theatre
The Mannheim National Theatre was founded in 1779 and is regarded as the oldest municipal theatre in Germany. It gained fame in 1782 with the premiere of Friedrich Schiller's "The Robbers", which is why Mannheim is known as the city of Schiller. Today the four-division house brings opera, drama, ballet and children's and youth theatre together under one roof. During the renovation of its main building, the theatre also performs at alternative venues across the city. As a cultural institution, the National Theatre has shaped Mannheim's stage life for over two centuries.
