Old Observatory
The Old Observatory in Mannheim's city centre was built between 1772 and 1774 under Prince-Elector Carl Theodor and was once one of the most important astronomical research sites in Europe. The striking tower recalls the heyday of science and enlightenment in the Electoral Palatinate. Across several storeys it once housed instruments for observing the skies. Today the listed building is a landmark of the city's scholarly past. The Old Observatory unites architecture, history and Mannheim's contribution to astronomy.
