Down to earth, without any concept ambitions and with regulars from the neighbourhood: the Gaststätte Am Rheindamm in Neckarau is a classic German inn of a kind that is becoming rarer in Mannheim. Regional German cooking is what reaches the table, and the kitchen stays open into the later evening. The name refers to the position near the Rhine dyke in the south of the city, where housing, allotments and the embankment meet. For visitors it is less a sight than an opportunity to experience Mannheim away from the Squares - most naturally after a walk along the river.
